Seaweed Benefits
Seaweed products have long been used by humans for food and healing.
They are becoming increasingly popular for use as Spa and Thalassotherapy
products. “Thalassa” is Greek for "sea" and
lends its name to this unique method of preventative and curative treatment
which uses the renowned therapeutic virtues of seawater and seaweed to
oxygenate, tone, moisturise and revitalise the body and the skin.
Scientists report that Seaweeds are rich in vitamins A1, B1, B2, B6,
B12, C, E, K, pantothenic acid, folic acid, and niacin. They are an important
supply of 60 trace elements and an excellent source of over 12 minerals,
especially sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc
and manganese. In fact, Seaweeds contain much larger concentrations of
what is present in seawater, and in a form, which can easily be assimilated.
The potassium-sodium content of sea vegetables is usually quite close
to that occurring naturally in the human body. Many marine algae are
a source of vitamin B12, which is rarely found in land vegetables.
The low occurrence of goitre (a malfunction of the thyroid gland) in
coastal regions where seaweed is traditionally consumed is often attributed
to their iodine content. Alginic acid is an important constituent of
the cell wall of brown seaweeds and it is mainly responsible for their
tensile strength and elasticity, essential for survival in turbulent
seawater. It acts as a natural cleanser for the intestines.
Studies undertaken in the Gastro-Intestinal research Laboratory of McGill
University (Montreal) indicate that it can assist with the removal of
toxins from body tissue by binding with them to form insoluble salts
which are then eliminated naturally.

Active
Substances and Properties
The positive effects of seaweed products are significant. Aromantic
stocks a range of Seaweed raw materials and products for spa treatments
that contain Lithothamnium calcareum and Laminaria digitata for external
use on the skin. Sourced directly from small producers on the west coast
of Ireland, the carefully processed product does not contain any chemical
additives or preservatives.
The bio-complex of finely ground Lithothamnium and Laminaria Seaweed
together with Sea Salt revitalises the metabolism, breaks down cellulite
deposits and disperses local fatty cells to improve the body's general
health and appearance. Metabolic slag, harmful acids and toxins are being
naturally discharged from the connective tissue. The special combination
of minerals relieves muscular spasm and increases the circulation - leaving
your skin soft and glowing.
Lithothamnium calcareum
The finely ground, calcified seaweed is distinguished by
high absorbency into the body. It is rich in calcium and magnesium, but
also contains significant levels of other minerals and trace elements
like phosphorous, potassium, manganese, boron, iodine, zinc, copper, selenium
and cobalt. These minerals restore tone and vitality to the body, whilst
helping to cleanse and detoxify.
Laminaria digitata
The more traditional green seaweed is also rich in essential energizing
minerals and trace elements. It contains amino acids and vitamin A,
E, C and B. It helps to stimulate the production of collagen in the
body and because of its purging, draining, metabolism accelerating and
re mineralising properties, it is favourably used in Thalasso treatments.
It strengthens the immune system, increases vitality and protects against
damage from free radicals.
Iodine
The concentration of iodine is high in seaweed and it is responsible
for the synthesis of thyroid gland hormones. Oxygen absorption of the
cells and fat- and carbohydrate-metabolism is stimulated. (Caution with
hyper thyroidism and iodine allergy.)
Sea Salt
Sea Salt releases the toxic agents from tissue, improves the blood circulation
and regulates the pH value of the tissue. Metabolic slag, harmful acids,
urea and albumen are being discharged naturally - leaving the skin and
body free to regenerate. Sea Salt helps to strengthen the resistance
of the skin, whilst maintaining the delicate water balance and additionally
acts as an antiseptic.

How to use Aromantic’s Beauty Face Mask & Body Wrap...
Our Beauty Face Mask and Body Wrap is fragrance-free, white and is made
up from a combination of natural seaweed. This unique formulation with
its exceptional properties creates a new easy Peel-off Seaweed mask,
which improves skin texture, leaving it soft, refreshed and glowing.
Beauty Face Mask
Method:
- Blend 25g of powder with 75ml of lukewarm water for approximately
1 minute until a soft paste has been created.
- Apply the Mask immediately in a thick layer on cleansed skin, avoiding
the eye area and close to the hairline. Work fast and try not to lay
the Mask in more than one layer on the skin.
- Let the Mask work for at least 10 minutes (the Mask dries after approx.
6 minutes).
- Peel off the Mask by loosening it around the edges and carefully
peeling it away. It loosens easily.
- Rub away any left over edges and rinse off the face.
- Afterwards, apply a Skin Toner, followed by Cream or Facial Oil.
Beauty Body Wrap
You need to have two people when making a Body Wrap. A Body Wrap
is done in different stages on the body. This mix is enough for
half the front and back of the body. It is suitable to wrap one
side at a time, this means you need to make 2-3 mixes to cover half the
body.
Method:
- Blend 100g of powder with 300ml of lukewarm water (18-20°C).
- Blend thoroughly for 1 minute till a soft paste is created.
- Apply the Body Wrap straight onto cleansed skin in a thick layer.
Work fast. A spatula will help you spread the Wrap more easily.
- Make another mix and continue until the part of the body is covered.
- Let the Body Wrap work for 15 minutes (it dries after 6 minutes).
- Loosen
off the edges and carefully peel off the Wrap. It slips easily away.
- Rub
away the left over edges and carefully remove them.
- Rinse off
and apply your normal skin care product such as a Body Lotion or Cream.
Carrageen Seaweed INCI: Carrageenan
Carrageen Seaweed has been used by people living by the coast around
the North Atlantic for many years. In Ireland it is known as Irish Moss
and is used as food for humans and animals. Most of the moss is harvested
by rakes from small boats. The rakes may be operated by hand only or
drawn after a boat. The wet moss is brought to drying plants operated
by the Carrageen manufacturers and dried to less than 20% humidity to
preserve the quality of the Seaweed and facilitate transportation to
the extraction plants.
Carrageen Seaweed is a polysaccharide when combined with water, form
viscous compounds producing a variety of runny to more solid Gels. It
can be used externally for infections and inflammations and internally
in the mouth, throat, stomach and digestive tract where it coats the
skin or mucous membranes with a protective film or barrier against mechanical
or chemical damage. It relieves pain, is cooling and emollient (softening).
It is easily dissolved in water.
It contains a wide range of minerals, vitamins and trace elements. It
is a low calorie food. Much of the carbohydrate content is not actually
absorbed by the human digestive system but passes through as fibre. Hence
it is also a good source of roughage.
Carrageen Seaweed Bath
Dried Carrageen is good for Baths and Gels as it contains natural polysaccharides,
which create viscous compounds. It can also be used in liquid soaps and
shower gels to make your products softer and more gentle on the skin
instead of salt. In a bath its softening and protective properties make
it ideal for skin irritations and itchiness. Use 15-20g for a Whole Body
Bath. Simply boil it for 15-20 minutes and add it to the bath water.
